As is the case with many jazz festivals, the music presented will encompass a wide variety of genres and headliners will include huge acts like pop star Christina Aguilera, Jamaican rapper Sean Paul, five-time GRAMMY winner CeeLo Green, and Sting, who’ll be performing with Mr. Boombastic himself, reggaeton kingpin Shaggy.
The Curaçao North Sea Jazz Festival will be held in Willemstad, the island nation’s capital and main seaport, on three stages adjacent to the beach.
Sting and Shaggy recently released a collaborative album of reggae tunes called 44/876, and on the effort’s title cut Sting sings “I have a dream that I’m swimming in the Caribbean Sea.” The former frontman for The Police will certainly have easy access to any of Curaçao’s 38 white sand beaches, as will festival-goers and appearing artists like Patti LaBelle, Grace Jones, Jason DeRulo and the great singer, songwriter, pianist and producer Burt Bacharach.
While any of the festival performers may veer into jazz at any given time, the format will be truly represented by sax man Kamasi Washington, the Michel Camilo Trio, led by their piano-playing namesake, and the long-running contemporary jazz group Spyro Gyra.
